The study of mouse models of lupus has provided us clues to the etiology of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Mouse models of lupus have led to the identification of several candidate genes that have emerged. Meanwhile, induced models of lupus have provided insight into the role of environmental factors in lupus as well as provided a better understanding of cellular mechanisms involved in the progression of disease. The SLE-like phenotypes present in these models have also served to screen numerous potential lupus therapies Furthermore, knowledge gained from mouse models will provide therapy targets for the treatment of lupus or SLE.

A study that was published on March 6 concluded that a protein called CD11b can bring down inflammation that occurs in people with Lupus. The treatment for lupus seems to be on it's way. There has to be multiple tests taken of the supposed "treatment" or "cure" before it can be approved and used. Currently, rodents/mice are the main models for this big project. Researchers transmitted the disease onto the rodents/mice first. Then they waited for symptoms to show. When it was obvious that the rodents/mice had lupus, researchers injected them with the soon to be treatment for lupus. This treatment reduced the symptoms and lupus itself. After 5 years of studying and finding a treatment, Jochen Reiser and other Rush researchers we able to see their hard work turn out for the best.

New studies have been made throughout many countries in regards to lupus. Hormones are a risk factor for lupus. Recently, a conclusion has been made saying estrogen ( a female reproductive hormone) can be a cause for lupus especially during childbirth. Scientist are able to research estrogen and find an individuals gene that can suppress the hormone. Also, since lupus is an autoimmune disease (the immune system attacks itself) suppressors have been made to stall flare ups and other disease Ex.kidney disease. Research in lupus has advanced tremendously as new techniques have been made to stop occurrences. Although there are not any cures at the moment.
